Succulents

The so-called “other succulents” are any plants which are succulent but are not cacti - so all cacti are succulents but all succulents are not cacti! Leaf succulents have fattened leaves, often with a glossy or downy protective surface, and sometimes growing in tight overlapping structures like columns and almost flower like rosettes. The leaf colours can be quite extraordinary, with the echeverias for example having a huge range of shades. They also often produce interesting flowers, with some offering welcome winter colour, like the crassula family.
echeverias, aloes, aeoniums, crassulas

echeveria, crassula and other succulents
The euphorbias are stem succulents that do look very like cacti, with globular and columnar shapes and a spiky appearance. They are completely unrelated but have adapted to similar hot and dry conditions. However they have vestigial leaves, tiny or thorn like, and lack the areoles that distinguish true cacti.

Sample photographs of each succulent are available by clicking on the plant name. After viewing a photo, just click the back button on your web browser to return to this page.
